And if you also enjoy doing art projects, then you probably have most of these supplies already lying around your home. But even if you don’t, you can buy everything that you need for a reasonable price. So, prepare for the creepiest and cutest Halloween ever!
Did you know you can decorate your home on a budget with a few things around the house and a little imagination to have a spook-tacular Halloween this year? So, instead of buying your Halloween decorations for your home this year, give your wallet a break and try making these DIY Halloween decorations yourself.
Outdoor Halloween Decorations
- Backyard/frontyard cemetery: This simple Halloween decoration idea turns your yard into a terrifying cemetery. You can use reclaimed materials to create a free graveyard. All you need to do is cut different sized shapes out of cardboard and paint them to look like aging tombstones. Once each piece is dry, organize them on the lawn or walkway to look like a mini graveyard. You can also make the tombstones out of wood, if you have any lying around. Wood will last longer than cardboard and you won’t have to worry about the pieces getting wet and ruined. Wood will also stand up better in the grass. If you want to make the tombstones look more aged and real, blend white paint onto the edges and glue some artificial moss onto it, which can be found at your local craft store for an inexpensive price.
- Ghost-Lit Walkway: If you have empty milk cartons in your recycling bin, you can create a ghost-lit walkway that your trick-or-treaters will love. For this project, you will need several milk cartons, black construction paper, and artificial candles to fill the cartons. Cut a small hole in the bottom of each carton and make ghost faces by cutting out a pair of eyes, nose and mouth from the construction paper and clue onto the front of the carton. Then place the artificial candle inside and line the cartons along your walkway and turn each candle on. The cartons will light up, illuminating each face. If you don’t happen to have artificial candles, you can always use white Christmas lights to light up the ghosts.
- Giant Spiders: Spiders fit right into the spooky Halloween theme. You can transform a few black trash bags into giant spiders that fit on your porch if you have one or up in a tree. All you need are five black trash bags and stuffing such as newspaper, packing materials or even leaves. Fill one trash bag with the stuffing and tie it closed to create the spider’s body. Then, take four empty trash bags and secure them to the bottom of the spider’s body to create the eight legs. Once the legs are in place, you can use a glue gun to secure them to the center of the body. You can also use the bottom of Styrofoam cups and glue them onto the body to make eyes.
Indoor Halloween Decorations
- Creepy Mirror: Nothing screams Halloween more than a mysterious creepy message on a mirror. Cut newspaper into the letters or your choice, such as “beware”, place on mirror and spray with a temporary wax matte finish spray cleaner. If you don’t have any spray, you can purchase a bottle for cheap and the clean up afterwards is easy!
- Flying Bats: With a few pieces of black construction paper and some tape, you can have bats flying around your house in no time! This project is super easy, and you can put them up just about anywhere. Collect some black construction paper and use a white marker to draw a bat outline on one side of each piece and cut the bats out with scissors. Add a piece of double-sided tape to one side and stick the bats along your walls, ceiling or even your kitchen cabinets.
- Vampire Napkin Rings: Vampire teeth will make your table setting look so cute it’s scary. Splash white cloth napkins with red paint or even red Kool-Aid and tie vampire teeth around the center of each napkin with a white twist tie.
- Wicked Witch Candy Dish: Do you have an old pair of high heels lying around? Turn them into a candy bowl! Wrap the heels in black sparkly paper or spray paint them black, if they’re not black already, and fill the shoes with wrapped Halloween treats!
