One of the biggest news stories of 2012 was Hurricane Sandy sweeping through the Caribbean and up the East Coast of the United States in late October. With tropical-force winds reaching out 580 miles, Sandy was the second-largest Atlantic storm on record. It left dozens dead, thousands homeless and 7.5 million businesses and households without power. The scope and cost of the recovery is estimated to cost as much as $50 billion.
